2020 has been cruising by quickly! Us first graders have been busy learning at a high rate. We are really coming into our own as learners. These awesome first graders make their teacher proud every single day! As I write this we are on our second straight snow day. We were suppose to host community meeting this morning. Mr. Stevenson is working on rescheduling so that we get our chance to put on this fun event. It is hard to imagine that we only have one more week of learning before February break! When we come back from break is the time Mr. Stevenson no longer helps first graders tie their shoes. So hopefully your first grader has become independent on this skill out of necessity.

To kick off Black History Month, we learned with our fifth grade buddies about the Underground Railroad. We learned that folks in the north would put out certain colored blankets to let escaping slaves know that the cost was clear and that the people inside would help. We made our own quilts with our buddies from Miss Kelleher’s class.

We recently celebrated the 100th day of first grade. On this special day, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade created some mixed grade groups and we circulated to each room. At each spot, we did a variety of activities that revolved around 100. Once all the first graders were back together in our classroom we worked together to create our 100th of school trail mix. Each ingredient had exactly 100 pieces in it. Be sure to ask your first grader what their favorite ingredient was!

December was a busy month in first grade! We really worked very hard right up to break but we did have some fun mixed in. We will be starting January off with reviewing routines and I will be slowly ramping up the difficulty of our reading.

We enjoyed cookie decorating and ornament making which attracted many adults to our classroom.

We hosted many of our grandparents. The kids greatly enjoyed showing off some of their favorite activities and I enjoyed meeting so many wonderful grandparents.
We enjoyed lounging and watching Charlie Brown’s Christmas.
We absolutely rocked out at the holiday community meeting!
I let the kids help me pick out what book to read to my niece for her first Christmas.
I will see you all in 2020 and I am grateful to be their teacher. Until Thursday, I will be putting up some big mile days in the White Mountains.

The first week of December was a busy one in first grade! We welcomed a new classmate to bring our total to 17 (if you don’t count Mr. Stevenson as one) kids. We created mugs for all the adults at school and on the marshmallows we wrote nice things about them. We sung our hearts out at the holiday concert. We ventured to the forest classroom with our Westshire friends to see if we could see signs of animals hibernating, adapting, or migrating now that the snow is here. We were exhausted after we got back! We explored the book fair in the library. We celebrated two new seven year olds.

Day of Science at Westshire

We had an action packed day with our new first grade friends at Westshire!
We learned about the four types of precipitation so be sure to have a first grader tell you all about them.
